Fantaisie-Impromptu

Fantaisie-Impromptu is a beautifully simple yet profoundly complex piece. There are two versions in which you can enjoy this masterpiece: the 1834 version and the 1835 version. The 1834 version, or “Fontana Version,” is the one most commonly performed today. In contrast, the “d’Este Version,” which did not come to light until almost a century later, remains dwarfed by its earlier counterpart. The 1835 version is considered to be more “complete,” while the 1834 version is seen as more of a draft. However, it is important to note that the 1834 version was edited, prepared for publication and subsequently “completed” by Julian Fontana. Therefore, whether you choose the Fontana or d’Este Version, both are equally complete and equally beautiful.
